Wine Advocate #229   (Dunnuck/Parker)

A wine I’ve had numerous times, yet never as spectacular as on this occasion, the 100% Grenache 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape Colombis sports a deep ruby, opaque color to go with a huge nose of lavender, incense, Provencal herbs, licorice and ground pepper. Nothing comes closer to representing the essence of Provence, and this full-bodied, unctuous, elegant and sexy effort has sweet tannin, not a single hard edge to be found and a blockbuster finish. It’s drinking so well now, I don’t see any reason to hold off, but I suspect it will keep for another decade.

Wine Advocate #185   (Parker)

Another wine that performed far better from bottle than it did last year is the 500-case lot of 100% old vine Grenache, the Isabel Ferrando 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Colombis, which is aged completely in cement tanks prior to being bottled without filtration. An exquisite bouquet of kirsch liqueur, licorice, lavender, pepper, and spice soars from the glass. The aromatics may be even more intense than those of the Charles Giraud. This full-bodied, opulent wine represents an extraordinary expression of old vine Grenache that is pure, rich, and majestic. It can be drunk early in life or cellared for 15+ years. Tasting at Domaine de Saint-Prefert was one of the most memorable tastings I have had in 2009.

The energetic and very passionate Isabel Ferrando got her start in Chateauneuf du Pape in 2002, only to experience historic flooding and the most disastrous vintage since 1956 and 1932. However, she is a strong woman, and survived that calamitous vintage to turn out what was essentially her debut, the fabulous 2003s. She has followed that up with strong efforts in 2004, 2005, and 2006, and her greatest wines to date, the monumental 2007s. Interestingly most of her estate is located in the southernmost area of Chateauneuf du Pape, a region known as Serres, which is largely sandy soils. Until this visit, I had not realized how good the Saint-Prefert white wines are (only 400-500 cases produced in most vintages). To reiterate, the 2007s are the greatest wines Isabel Ferrando has yet made. They represent three sensational yet totally different styles of Chateauneuf du Pape.
